REDRUM true crime

In August 2010, Gemma Hayter, a young woman with learning disabilities, was found dead on a disused railway line in Rugby, Warwickshire. She had been tortured and killed by people she believed were her friends. This week on REDRUM, Grace tells the story of the Gemma Hayter murder: who she was, how “mate crime” put her in danger, and the CCTV footage that captured her being led away. We also cover the 2011 trial, where Chantelle Booth, Daniel Newstead and Joe Boyer were jailed for life and the judge described the case as a “chronicle of heartlessness.”
Gemma’s death led to a Serious Case Review, which found that opportunities to protect her were missed. Her mother, Sue Prince, has spent years speaking out about disability hate crime and pushing for answers. At 9:15am on the 21st of October 1966, a colliery spoil tip above the Welsh village of Aberfan, collapsed and slid down the mountainside. It engulfed Pantglas Junior School and a row of nearby houses. 144 people were killed, 116 of them children, most between the ages of 7 and 10. The warning signs had been raised for years, and the inquiry that followed found the National Coal Board responsible for a disaster that never should have happened. Yet no one was prosecuted, and no one lost their job. On the 21st of October 2026, Aberfan marked 60 years since that morning, and we’re re-releasing this episode to mark the anniversary. We want to remember the children and adults who were lost, and to look again at the failures that led to the tragedy and the community that has carried its grief ever since.

Sade Robinson was 19, working two jobs and in her final semester at Milwaukee Area Technical College, studying criminal justice. On the 1st of April 2024, she went on a first date in downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin. By the next evening, a human leg had been found on the shore of Lake Michigan at Warnimont Park in Cudahy, and over the following weeks more of her remains would surface across two states. In this episode of REDRUM, we cover the murder of Sade Robinson: who she was, the night she was last heard from, the discovery that shocked Milwaukee, and the investigation that followed. On the morning of the 3rd of February 1967, Violet Shenton, a London shopkeeper and landlady, climbed the stairs above her leather-goods shop at 304 Holloway Road. Her tenant was Joe Meek, the pioneering record producer behind “Telstar,”, and a man NME later ranked the greatest producer of all time.
Joe's makeshift studio had produced hit after hit while Violet banged a broom on her ceiling. But by 1967 his career was collapsing. He was in debt, increasingly paranoid and living in fear of the police after the unsolved Tattingstone suitcase murder of 17 year old Bernard Oliver. Within minutes of Violet reaching his door, she and Joe were both dead. Officialy, it started with rent and noise... but the people closest to the case aren’t convinced. So what really happened on those stairs?
