Calls for inquiry into top surgeon following Four Corners investigation | ABC News Top Stories

    23/02/2026 | 1 mins.
The Australian Medical Association says private hospitals have questions to answer, following a Four Corners story into a senior Melbourne gynaecologist.

The Federal Health Minister Mark Butler has asked for an inquiry into clinical governance at Victoria's largest private hospital, after the investigation found gynaecologist Simon Gordon operated for 'severe' endometriosis, despite pathology showing little or no trace of the disease.

The hospital received a number of complaints from clinicians over the years.

The federal opposition has sidestepped questions over whether its push to stop families with ISIS links returning to Australia would be  constitutional.

The coalition's proposal would make it an offence for anyone to assist a person with links to the terrorist group from returning to the country.

Shadow Home Affairs Minister Jonno Duniam says the opposition will introduce the legislation next month.

But he's refused to say if advice of constitutional experts has been sought.

Police have revealed kidnappers made two attempts to burn a stolen car that's believed to be linked to the kidnapping of Sydney grandfather Chris Baghsarian.

The 85 year old was abducted from his North Ryde home early on 13th of February, in what police believe is a case of mistaken identity.

Police say forensic evidence found in the stolen car has links to a run-down house at Dural on Sydney's north-west fringe, where it's believed the kidnappers were based.

Health authorities are investigating a prominent Melbourne surgeon after Four Corners revelations about accusations of unnecessary surgeries that have had life altering impacts on their patients.

Questions are also being asked about what Victoria's largest private hospital knew about his conduct and whether it could have acted sooner.

Debate continues to rage in federal parliament about how to deal with a group of so called ISIS brides and their children who appear intent on returning to Australia.

The opposition's proposing laws which would punish anyone helping people with links to Islamic State coming back to Australia, but the government says it's not a serious proposal and could be unconstitutional.

The government's issued a temporary exclusion order to stop one of the women from entering Australia, but it says nothing can be done to block the rest of the group from returning, if they logistically can.

Police will continue to search bushland on Sydney's north west fringe for a grandfather who was mistakenly kidnapped ten days ago.

Authorities believe the offenders mixed up Chris Baghsarian, who's in his 80s, with someone from a crime family living nearby.

The fresh search is near an abandoned property where police believe the victim was held for days after he was abducted.

There's serious concerns for the victim's welfare given he's elderly and needs daily medication.

Federal health minister Mark Butler says he felt "physically sick" while reading the testimonies uncovered by Four Corners in its investigation of a Melbourne surgeon.

The ABC discovered the senior gynaecologist repeatedly removed tissue and organs from young women for "severe" endometriosis when pathology showed they had little or no trace of the disease.

Medicare's also investigating the surgeon charging a Medicare item number designated for severe endometriosis.
