29/04/2025 | 24 mins.

"Treat Motivated" Dogs - What Does This REALLY Mean?
25/02/2025 | 19 mins.
Welcome!First off! I apologize for the dead air space, I am using a different recording platform that apparently does not like my taste in music :-) And, as you cat lovers can relate to, I had to attend to my cat's needs. :-) This episode explores the term "Treat Motivated" referencing common scientific studies to determine what this really means and if the focus on treat motivation means the study is missing some very important information about our dogs!Secondly, I use the example of a client of a student in the CCBT Diploma Program at the Institute of Canine Psychotherapy to discuss the challenges in using Conditioning Methods with dogs that are not "treat motivated"And, finally, is "treat motivated" an advantage when adopting a dog?Be sure to check out www.instituteofcaninepsychotherapy.com for info! Our students are making waves in the canine behavioral and welfare sectors! Thanks to the Jeff Mertick Band for the silent music :-) My TEDX Talk is live! Is Your Dog Trainer "Popular" or "Impactful"? Why 2025 is the year of the Pet Parent.
31/12/2024 | 10 mins.
Welcome to the final episode of 2024! 2025 is becoming the year to not simply demand more from industry leaders that have no interest in providing more, but rather, finding those solutions, stepping outside the comfort zone and putting one's own goals first! Does this sound selfish? Pet professionals cannot succeed in this industry by following mainstream, pleasing the industry, remaining loyal to leaders who are more concerned with their own success than that of dog trainers. Continuing to divide the industry and blaming pet parents drives away progress. Pet parents, having an allegiance only to their dog, family, and community expect more from their trainers, and pet professionals need to provide the solutions. When pet professionals empower themselves, they are better equipped to educate pet parents, and, in turn, the needs of dogs are met. The launch of the Institute of Canine Psychotherapy is much more than the launching of a one-of-a-kind institute - it represents the movement toward positioning pet parents and forward-thinking, brave, dog trainers as leaders in the canine behavior and animal welfare realms.Empower Yourself to Make An Impact.
