Ahhh strongholds. One of those Christian words we hear all the time and use because it makes us sound super spiro: "I'm battling strongholds, guys"

In this episode of Pray & Tell, Annie shares how reading through 1 Samuel, and David fleeing from Saul and hiding in strongholds in the mountains, gave her a new understanding of spiritual strongholds in her life.

When we're talking about strongholds, we're talking about an entrenched pattern of thinking, believing or behaving that resists God's truth and gives sin a foothold in a person's life. It can often feel like no matter how hard you try, the grip is so strong.

It might look like:
Chronic unbelief ("God won't help me")
Fear and anxiety that dominates your life
Bitterness and unforgiveness
Pride and self-sufficiency
Addiction and habitual sin
Shame and condemnation that persist despite God's promise of forgiveness
Idolatry - finding ultimate security, identity or worth in something other than God

And just like David hid in a physical stronghold to escape Saul, we can hide in spiritual strongholds. The difference is that David's strongholds protected him, while ungodly strongholds imprison us.

Our goal as Christians is to exchange false refuges for God - the ultimate stronghold, the best place of safety.
