Woke is coming back, but not the crude Identity Marxism (Intersectionality) of the 2010s and first years of the 2020s. A new Woke, a "Woke 2.0," is arising. It's focuses will be largely a return to old-school Marxist standbys like class theory, materialism, and "anti-imperialism" in its new postcolonial form. Hating, not just opposing, Israel is a hallmark of this Woke 2.0 evolution, as is being "anti-corruption," which we can be sure will be selectively applied. Woke 2.0, though, is the long-anticipated (or dreaded) "materialist turn" we have been predicting since at least 2022, and it is now here. In the 1960s, a radical Islamic Salafist named Sayyid Qutb wrote a short little radical book called Milestones (https://amzn.to/4bn9hMX) in which he laid out a new vision for what the world usually calls "Islamism" today. That model wasn't just rooted in a backwards-looking radical fundamentalist vision of Islam called Jihadist Salafism as taken up by the Muslim Brotherhood; it was also based directly on Vladimir Lenin's radical model for creating and installing Communism through Bolshevism, particularly Lenin's 1902 booklet called What Is To Be Done? (https://www.marxists.org/archive/lenin/works/1901/witbd/) The prescription is for an ideologically pure radical vanguard to take control and pull the ideology into global dominance, even against its own moderates. In this episode of the New Discourses Podcast, host James Lindsay continues his reading of Milestones in a fourth volume, outlining the nature of this vanguard approach as Qutb explains it in his third chapter and tying it definitively to other radical ideological movements, especially Lenin's Communism. What are the foundations of "the West" as we understand it today? Many of us land on a hyphenated term that finds itself under attack in the world today: our foundations are Judeo-Christian. But then, we also must admit the relevance of the seismic shifts in thought and political organization of the various movements we retroactively recognize as "the" Enlightenment (really: the various Enlightenments). That much is undeniable. The correct expression of these currents, which incorporated into a Christian ethic a great deal of "Enlightenment" thinking and also a revitalization of much Judaic thinking, arose on the American continent more or less uniquely. Thus, "the West" and the "Western Civilization" that we defend today is not just Judeo-Christian or "Enlightenment" but specifically Judeo-Christian-American. We're seeing a lot from the Right about a return to tradition... or is it to "Tradition"? As it turns out, there's yet another example of a twisted esoteric philosophy out there that uses a term we're all familiar with in a specific way most of us don't even know about. That school of thought is called "Traditionalism" and has a very peculiar, esoteric (Gnostic) understanding of the concept of a capital-T "Tradition" that's like New Age turned inside-out and upside-down. Like almost all such things, it is a kind of ideological parasite that lures people into something bad through something that seems to be something good, even necessary.
